In order to improve the skill level of staff on operation and maintenance of equipment, so as to speed up the overall mechanization of JCHX Zambia, since July 2017, the Chambishi Project held an Excellent Crew Appraisal, which produced a strong stimulative effect.
For a long time, due to uneven performance among operators in the use of trackless equipment in the Chambishi project, problems such as improper pre-shift spot check, insufficient lubrication of the equipment, incomplete vehicle washing and others, resulted in rise of equipment failure rate and reduction of equipment utilization rate. In view of these phenomena, upon research and decisions of managers of the equipment room, monthly excellent crew evaluation activities has been introduced to motivate operators, especially to strengthen Zambian operators to enhance daily inspection of equipment, maintenance awareness and civilized behavior of normal, standardized operation.
On the occasion of the initiation of excellent crew evaluation in July, nearly 3000 key photos of all the main equipment of the project and various parameters of equipment performance were generally collected through the equipment room members’ work of uninterrupted inspection and data collection for 2 weeks. Then, the excellent and poor crew of the same equipment were finally ranked through comprehensively analyzing and scoring on cleanness, lubrication, spot check card, engine status, the wear and tear of the junction points, the damages caused by man-made factors by reviewing these photos and data of each machine. Under the approval of and strong support of the project department, the list of outstanding and poor crews is posted on company bulletin board, accompanied with inspection photos of these crews, and rewarding for excellent operators, as well as the announcement of commendation and criticism.
Since the launch of excellent crew evaluation, animated repercussions have generated among the staff. Whenever the excellent crew rating notice has been posted on the bulletin board, there is always a crowd both Chinese and Zambian in the beginning or at the end of each shift gathering to watch. Based the findings of the team, this incentive measure has produced good effect with positive response from operators, pre-shift inspection, cleaning, lubrication work are done much better than before, and each crew wants to strive for excellence and get rewarded. This measure will have a positive impact among the operators, as they are scrambling to bring up their best to prolong the service life of the equipment and reduce the failure rate.
